Five steps to follow when renovating your kitchen as a do-it-yourself project. If you follow the steps you should end up with a kitchen that is not only functional, affordable but stylish too.

Step one. You need to sit down and make a list of appliances you want to fit in your new kitchen. As this is a big project, write everything down, think what will fit in your area. Stand in the kitchen and pretend to cook in it to make sure you have not forgotten anything. Think about where the food will be prepared and where will the waste go. Where the food will be washed and will the dishes be cleaned in a dishwasher. When you have all this in mind, it is time for step two.

Step two. You will need some graph paper. Measure your kitchen area. Measure the floor space, height and make sure you have all doors and windows measured. Let’s say for every centimeter you use one square on the graph paper. Use a pencil and slowly make an outline of the room. When this is done it is time to start planning the layout of your new kitchen. The normal kitchen unit is sixty centimeters deep by one meter long. If you have an odd shaped room you do not need to worry as bespoke units are available. When you have your well thought out plan it is time for step three.

Step three. With your new kitchen plan to hand, it is time to hit the shops and exhaustively check out all the offers and outlets for season deals. You will have to show the kitchen designer your plan. They will copy this onto their software, this will ensure all your fixtures and fittings will fit in and be functual. With a supplier found and the kitchen ordered, it is now time for step four.

Step four. This is the demolition stage. Now careful consideration needs to be taken here as you are your own project manager for your kitchen renovation project. What is the delivery date of the new units? How long will it take to demolish the old kitchen? How long will it take to make good the plumbing and electrics for the new appliances and units. Your family will have to make alternative provisions for cooking whilst the kitchen is renovated. You must allow for delays, keep in contact with the supplier on the progress of the new kitchen. With all the preparation work done it is time for step five.

Step five. Your new kitchen has arrived and all the preparation work is complete. Slowly fit the units and remember measure twice cut or drill once. It is important to use a spirit level so all units are leveled. When it comes time to fit any integrated appliances ensure all wires and plumbing are tight secure and safe. Do not leave things and say ‘I will come back to that’ as you may forget. When all is finished you will have a functional stylish kitchen just as you wanted it.
